Alopecia is the medical description of the loss of hair from the head or body, sometimes to the extent of baldness. Unlike the common aesthetic depilation of body hair, alopecia tends to be involuntary and unwelcome, e.g., androgenic alopecia. However, it may also be caused by a psychological compulsion to pull out one's own hair (trichotillomania) or the unforeseen consequences of voluntary hairstyling routines (mechanical "traction alopecia" from excessively tight ponytails or braids, or burns to the scalp from caustic hair relaxer solutions or hot hair irons).

This includes the nasyam treatment of panchakarma followed by nutritional supplements, thaladharanam - a unique aurvedic treatment for hair loss and the lazer comb treatment. This combination gives an excellent result for the hair loss.

Hair fall according ayurveda

Due to these causes the tridoshas get vitiated and cause hair loss. Medicated oil with the herbs Bringaraja, Amalaki, Haritaki and vibhitaki is a best remedy for hair fall.

Preventing hair loss:

  • Patient education - Hair loss may also occur for reasons where it is possible to do something about it. If there is any hair loss and cannot attribute any reason to it, check to see that these things are not done.
  • Tying hair tightly for prolonged periods.
  • Wearing helmets, tight caps or turbans for long periods.
  • Using strong chemicals in hair.
  • Dieting or eating poor diet.

Bacterial or fungal infections of the scalp can also cause loss of hair. However, these can usually be cured easily with the use of medicines or medicated shampoos.

How to use shampoo?

  • A number of people just slop shampoo onto their heads without paying attention to the correct way of applying it. But it is important to keep a few things in mind:
  • Always ensure that hair is tangle free before shampooing. Before washing brush hair with head upside down to remove dust and impurities.
  • Always shampoo gently, using fingertips to work up lather.
  • Start lathering the scalp first. The grease, dirt accumulates here. Continue lathering moving towards end.
  • xDo not pile hair on top of head; let it hang naturally. This enables the lather to work its own way down from the roots to the ends.
For long hair, shampoo the scalp and then divide the hair into sections. Gently massage each section downwards, root to tip, between the palms of hands.

Washing out shampoo:

  • Rinse hair thoroughly with lukewarm water. Hot water dries both scalp and hair. A shower is the best way of washing out the shampoo.
  • Should any shampoo remain unwashed it will cause dryness of the scalp. Don't rub hair while rinsing.
  • Wet hair is very fragile. Let the water flow through.
  • After a shampoo, leave hair loose for a while until it is completely dry, as excess sweat or moisture can damage it.
  • Give hair a final rinse with cold water to stimulate blood circulation and to close the pores.
  • Take into accounts the type of water. If salty, mix one or two pinches of washing soda (sodium carbonate) to the bucket. This will soften water which would otherwise leave a dulling deposit on the hair.

Herbal hair cleansers:

Reeta (soapnut) and shikakai form the best natural therapeutic cleansing base for herbal shampoo, which cleans gently without adversely affecting the scalp and the hair. Reeta is best for oil hair as it causes excessive dryness. But the dryness can be countered by mixing it with amla (gooseberry), making it suitable for dry hair.
